"Sorvolando la città di Houston" - di Mario Macaluso

Mi piace volare. Volare mi permette di meditare, leggere e anche sognare. La settimana scorsa, mentre l’aereo attraversava, nel buio della notte, la vasta area metropolitana di Houston, nel Texas, tanti pensieri m’invasero la mente.

Sospeso nell’aria, galleggiavo su paesi e villaggi, e su poveri e ricchi quartieri che scintillavano come uno stupendo diadema trapunto di diamanti e pietre preziose.

Dovunque volgevo lo sguardo, ammiravo una sinfonia fantastica di luci luminose che, scintillanti, definivano e contrastavano il chiaroscuro di quello che appariva come un imponente quadro notturno.

Volavo sulla citta’ dell’uomo. Laggiu’ c’erano grandi e piccole case, villini e grossi palazzi, luoghi privati e appartamenti popolari che lanciavano tutti verso di me un segnale luminoso della presenza dei loro abitanti seduti a tavola per la cena.

Con la mente scesi a visitarli. Alcuni sorridevano, mentre altri piangevano. Alcuni mostravano l’esuberanza euforica del loro successo, mentre altri affrontavano la triste realta’ del fallimento. Alcuni contavano i loro guadagni, mentre altri racimolavano i pochi soldi perche’ erano disoccupati e senza futuro.

Alcuni avevano ottenuto una promozione, mentre altri avevano portato a casa una lettera di licenziamento. Vidi nascere molti bambini e morire tante persone. Visitai giovani che lottavano contro malattie letali e anziani, soli, che contavano, disperati, i loro ultimi giorni. Incontrai cittadini meravigliosi, intenti a migliorare la loro societa’, ed altri invece impegnati a fare del male. Poi vidi coppie innamorate e una moltitudine di uomini e donne, papa’ e mamme che sognavano un futuro migliore per i loro figli che vivono nel timore dell’ora presente.

E cosi’ in quella notte buia, tutta quella gente emetteva il suo unico e distinto segnale che si trasformava in una sinfonia di luci che brillavano e scintillavano e che, splendendo verso l’ aereo, creavano un panorama che sembrava dall’alto come un paradiso utopistico sulla terra.

Ricchi e poveri, felici e infelici, giovani e vecchi erano tutti miei fratelli e sorelle che abitavano come me nella citta’ dell’uomo con le sue gioie e i suoi dolori, e coi suoi sogni e le sue paure.

Nella consapevolezza di questa fratellanza pensai a Dio, nostro padre, nella citta’ celeste, e Gli chiesi che mandasse il Suo raggio luminoso di pace e di speranza

Auspicando la benedizione divina sul popolo di Houston, sentii la potenza dell’amore divino nel mio spirito e, consapevole che siamo tutti figli di Dio, provai in me la calda sensazione di essere connesso spiritualmente con migliaia e migliaia di persone che non incontrero’, ne’ conoscero’ mai su questa terra.

Flying Over Houston

I love to fly. Flying for me is a time to meditate, to read or just to daydream.

Last week, as the plane was approaching in the darkness of the night the great metropolitan area of Houston, Texas, many thoughts flooded my mind.

Suspended in the air, I was gliding over villages, towns and hamlets, over rich and poor neighborhoods: all shimmering like a very large and spectacular piece of jewelry made of diamonds, diadems and precious stones.

Everywhere I looked, I saw a spectacular symphony of lights; thousands and thousands of lights sparkling brightly which were defining and contrasting the chiaroscuro of what appeared to be as an impressive night painting.

I was flying over the city of man. Down below, there were houses large and small, high and low buildings, gated communities and low-income apartments: all sending a bright signal of people’s presence gathered together for the evening meal.

In my mind I began to visit those people below. Some were smiling, others were crying. Some showed the exuberance and exhilaration of success, others the grim reality of failure. Some were counting their profits; others were pinching pennies with no job and no future. Some got a promotion today; others were handed a pink slip to bring home.

I saw children being born and all kinds of people die. I visited youngsters battling deadly ailments and older people, alone, counting their remaining days in sad despair

I met some wonderful citizens who were engaged in making their community better while others were bent to do evil. And then I saw couples in love and a multitude of men and women, mothers and fathers: all dreaming for a better future for their children who live with the fears of the present age.

Yet, in the darkness of the night, all those people emitted their unique, special signs which became a symphony of shining and shimmering lights that, beaming towards my plane, created what appeared to be a Utopian Paradise on earth.

Those people below were all my brothers and sisters who lived, like me, in the city of man with its joys and sorrows, and hope and dreams. In my awareness of the moment, I thought of God, our Father, in his heavenly city, and prayed that He would beam to these members of the human family His bright light of hope and peace, consolation and comfort, while my solitary plane was gliding above.In wishing God’s blessing on the inhabitants of Houston and their children, I felt the power and love of God in my spirit, and in the belief that we are all His children, I experienced a warm connection to thousands and thousands of people whom I will never meet and never know in this world.
